New Exercise in Combating Childhood Obesity: Summer Learning Programs:  Children gained more than twice as much weight during the summer than during the school year! Read more about summer learning opportunities as a strategy for reducing childhood obesity.

The (not so) Skinny on Summertime and Child Obesity:

  1. BMI gains were more than twice as large during the summer than the school year.  Summer weight intensified the racial/ethnic gap in obesity.
  2. Summer weight gain undermines otherwise effective obesity treatments during the school year.
  3. Why? (1) More sedentary time (i.e. tv and snacking), (2) More opportunities to overeat (i.e. celebrations, socializing, etc.), and (3) more exposure to highly caloric foods (i.e. sugary drinks).

OICA The Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition is a statewide initiative coordinated by the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy.
